This is confusing, I thought individual 'parts' of the blood (eg. plasma) were allowed, but not whole blood. At least that was the case before I stopped carrying my "blood card" (about 15y before I left the JW). At that point, fractions were "medical technology developed specifically for JW" wholly allowed and not a 'conscience matter'.

@TTWSYF: Abortion is a lot more nuanced of an issue. I personally don't support abortion except in the case of medical issues and that's where the grey part comes in, what percentage of risk are you willing to take for both yourself and the child and how much, if anything should we legislate.
As a libertarian myself, I don't think we should legislate any of it, because the minute you do you run into the vagaries on both sides of the issue, that does mean it would be legal if one declares an unborn child not to be human, but that's a risk I'm willing to take to let government or a judge not ruin the life of those that effectively need it and those that don't want to do it at great risk to themselves.

Ask David Dorne, he was trying to protect his store, hoping an 'old black man' could talk to the 'adolescents' and inspire some wisdom about the actual racism and non-violent protests in the 60s. He got shot.
And there are examples everywhere of police retreating and letting the citizens, often elderly, being beaten with 2x4's, stores and homes and buildings attacked with molotov cocktails, windows and cars smashed.
These people aren't 12 year old shoplifting some Nike's. They are adults, making adult choices, they should learn to live with adult consequences. Antifa and BLM are anarchists, anarchism means the survival of the fittest.
If the police won't help you, what recourse do you have in your own home when they come raping and looting and killing? This is real, both in Minnesota and in New York, the government is actually voting on defunding the police departments and it seems in Minneapolis they actually have a majority in city hall to push it through while in New York, the governor actually agrees with the rioters that his own police forces are bad.

As far as Europeans: The Swiss are all well armed and have gun training in high schools. They have a reason and they are as a reason one of the richest nations in the world and maintained that status for hundreds of years.
On gun laws: for some reason handguns require permits but rifles do not. In NY getting a handgun requires 9 months wait time, 5-7 character witnesses and an application to a judge. Rifles can be picked up as fast as they're shipped. A 9mm rifle is basically a handgun with a stock and a barrel but can be taken down to large pistol size.
On assault weapons: all weapons are assault weapons, I have knives and batons, those are assault weapons too. There is no reason to have a full-automatic, lacks precision and gets out of control unless you have a fixed mount.
Yes, America has lots of guns, but like Switzerland, it's a large area, there is no guarantee the cops can even drive to your house fast enough and as recently demonstrated, not an option if you live in a Democrat controlled area.

For most roving bands of looters, a small cartridge is sufficient. It's not like a zombie movie, you shoot one or two and the rest will go running. That's the same with most criminals, the risk/reward is too high if someone starts shooting. That's why crime in high gun ownership areas is low and in liberal areas where guns are banned (Chicago, NY, CA) crime is very high.
Drums and more bullets make the gun heavier and bulkier imho which in most cases you will need to hold a gun for a long time, not shoot it for a long time.

Your father is right, if you've been in the organization any time between the 80s and 2000s you have studied the apocalypse book and many other doomsday articles.
The ending of the preaching work at the hand of the government was a prophecy that has now been fulfilled, the rest of the prophecy states that the "wild beast" (the UN) will attack religion (and Trump seems like the one to trigger that by defunding the UN or something like that) and then the great tribulation will start.
The older JW have been hanging on to a lot of unfulfilled prophecy, even if they no longer teach them, many do remember them. It's another 1975 for many of the older ones I think.

Economic Recovery after COVID-19
by Simon init feels like we've really turned a corner, this morning especially.. the covid lockdowns are ending and medical systems were not overwhelmed plus there are existing treatments that have been proven to be effective (like hydroxychloroquine) and new vaccines and medicines in the pipeline.
a week or so ago the dems were dead against opening things up but since they are encouraging protests (which often turn violent) they can't continue that stance - thus proving trumps claim that it will soon be gone.
the majority of the deaths were politician-assisted (which i hope people are prosecuted for) so it's not the big risk we were led to believe and (over) reacted to.. the bls reported this morning that the us economy just added a huge number of jobs (most on record) and will undoubtedly benefit even more from a drive to source local production and supply chains going forwards.

I'll throw in another $25 to a local shelter on Trump for anyone willing to take the bet. His ratings are good, pretty much on par but much less fluctuating than Obama's or any other President, that means voters believe he is consistent (regardless which direction you stand on him).
On the other hand you have Biden, do you really think the 'security moms' and suburbia in general will want a President that stands with Antifa protesters against the police, bends the knee on television for the flag and on a better day acts like a creepy, hair-sniffing child molester?
Trump definitely has a chance of losing, but he's proven his economic skills and withstood many trials by fire. All he has to do is point at Biden and run some ads about the comparisons. The other thing Biden doesn't have is a good track record, again, another thing Trump can say: well, you had your 200 years in politics, what have you ever done?
The last problem for Biden is that he lost his only claim to 'good' records since the left wing has reversed on every one of their own policies that Biden signed (90s crime bill and forced bussing), even his current platform is talking about the middle class which the far-left has rejected has any claim to their wealth.
Biden seems like the politician that got left in the 20th century to me, I think a lot of people on both sides of the aisle think that and his VP pick will probably undermine most of what he stands for and his support base.

@oppostate: if you didn't hear, the major hydroxychloroquine studies that said it was bad (from Harvard) have been retracted.
The study in the Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine (the biggest papers) were retracted due to massive bias on behalf of the authors and influence from at least one major drug company conglomerate (hydroxychloroquine is off-patent and unlike other medicine, anyone can produce it)
